Entre Ruinas y Futuro: Intervención Contemporánea en Patrimonio Arquitectónico. Barichara - Santander

Abstract

La Capilla Santa Bárbara, ubicada en el centro histórico de Barichara, representa un hito patrimonial significativo dentro de la identidad arquitectónica del municipio. El deterioro estructural de su cubierta y su colapso parcial en 2023 genera preocupación y un llamado de una intervención que permita recuperar su estabilidad física y su valor cultural. El problema proyectual se sitúa en la tensión existente entre conservar, restaurar o transformar la edificación patrimonial sin perder su autenticidad histórica. Lo que se busca es desarrollar una propuesta de restauración arquitectónica que recupere la estabilidad estructural de la capilla mediante una intervención contemporánea capaz de dialogar con la arquitectura existente y su contexto urbano. La propuesta plantea la restauración de la estructura histórica y la incorporación de una envolvente ligera que reinterpreta el espacio interior. Asimismo, se propone la activación del espacio público y comercio informal propios de la cultura, mediante un mercado campesino que fortalezca la relación entre patrimonio, comunidad y turismo.

The Santa Bárbara Chapel, located in the historic center of Barichara, represents a significant heritage landmark within the municipality's architectural identity. The structural deterioration of its roof and its partial collapse in 2023 have generated concern and a call for intervention to restore its physical stability and cultural value. The design challenge lies in the tension between conserving, restoring, or transforming the heritage building without losing its historical authenticity. The aim is to develop an architectural restoration proposal that recovers the chapel's structural stability through a contemporary intervention capable of engaging with the existing architecture and its urban context. The proposal involves restoring the historic structure and incorporating a lightweight envelope that reinterprets the interior space. It also proposes the revitalization of the public space and informal commerce characteristic of the local culture through a farmers' market that strengthens the relationship between heritage, community, and tourism
