Given the context of insecurity and the built environment throughout
the 20th century, various urban planning movements have argued that the
built environment is not a neutral space, but rather directly influences the
frequency of crime and the behavior of citizens. In the current context of
Bogotá, the predominant response to crime has been the implementation of
defensive architecture based on fences, enclosures, and control devices
that, while intended to protect, are often ineffective in modifying the
subjective perception of insecurity and the fear of its inhabitants.
The gap between the physical solution and the subjective experience:
recent research suggests that the feeling of vulnerability persists due to
socio-territorial factors that traditional measures fail to address
comprehensively. There is a clear disconnect: while physical barriers
increase, the feeling of insecurity is fueled by the lack of social
interaction and the presence of antisocial behavior in the surrounding
environment. This has transformed sectors of the capital into a city of
borders, characterized by isolation, the fragmentation of the social fabric,
and distrust.
