Ecos del Pasado, Espacios del Presente

Abstract

Este proyecto se desarrolla en el barrio Santa Bárbara, que está dentro del centro histórico de Bogotá, barrio que actualmente denota diversas problemáticas vinculadas a los procesos de transformación urbanística y arquitectónicas transcurridos en el tiempo. La coexistencia de edificaciones patrimoniales, intervenciones contemporáneas y procesos de renovación urbana han dado lugar a rupturas dentro del tejido histórico, perjudicando la continuidad espacial y la lectura material del lugar. Como consecuencia, gran parte de las capas históricas que conforman la identidad del barrio han ido quedando invisibilizadas en la experiencia cotidiana de los habitantes y transeúntes del sector. Ante esta condición, la investigación aborda la necesidad de desarrollar estrategias arquitectónicas que establezcan relaciones más sutiles entre memoria, patrimonio y contemporaneidad, entendiendo la arquitectura no sólo como un objeto funcional, sino como una experiencia espacial y material vinculada a la percepción del usuario y el contexto urbano. En virtud de esta problematicidad, el proyecto nos ofrece el término de Materialidad Estratificada como posición arquitectónica que intenta visibilizar las distintas capas temporales que podemos encontrar en Santa Bárbara a partir de una integración consciente entre las ruinas patrimoniales y las nuevas intervenciones contemporáneas. Desde esta perspectiva, la materialidad se convierte en un elemento de valor conceptual y sensorial que va más allá del hecho constructivo, convirtiendo a los materiales, las texturas, la luz y las relaciones espaciales en transmisores de memoria y permanencia. El paradigma teórico desarrollado por el proyecto se apoya en las investigaciones de Peter Zumthor sobre las atmósferas arquitectónicas, de Juhani Pallasmaa en torno a la experiencia multisensorial, y de Carlo Scarpa en cuanto a la estratificación del tiempo en la arquitectura.

This project is developed within the Santa Bárbara neighborhood, located in the historic center of Bogotá, an area that currently reflects a series of issues associated with the urban and architectural transformation processes that have taken place over time. The coexistence of heritage buildings, contemporary interventions, and urban renewal processes has generated ruptures within the historical urban fabric, affecting both the spatial continuity and the material legibility of the place. As a consequence, many of the historical layers that shape the neighborhood’s identity have gradually become obscured within the everyday experience of residents and pedestrians. In response to this condition, the research addresses the need to develop architectural strategies capable of establishing more subtle relationships between memory, heritage, and contemporaneity, understanding architecture not merely as a functional object, but as a spatial and material experience intrinsically linked to user perception and the urban context. Within this framework, the project introduces the concept of Stratified Materiality as an architectural position that seeks to reveal the different temporal layers embedded within Santa Bárbara through a conscious integration of heritage ruins and new contemporary interventions. From this perspective, materiality becomes a conceptual and sensory element that transcends the purely constructive dimension, transforming materials, textures, light, and spatial relationships into carriers of memory and permanence. The theoretical framework of the project is supported by the investigations of Peter Zumthor regarding architectural atmospheres, Juhani Pallasmaa and his reflections on multisensory experience, and Carlo Scarpa in relation to the stratification of time in architecture.
