The coffee sector of the municipality of La Vega Cundinamarca is shrinking, it went from being
one of the largest references in Colombia for its very high quality to being dying as a result of
multiple factors such as pests and the unbridled growth of tourism, however, small producers who
still survive these abrupt changes continue to offer high quality products. Made entirely in an
artisanal way, preserving the methodologies of yesteryear and adding a value that not all markets
manage to understand, despite this they are losing prominence, the technification of the market
and the use of new more efficient practices are causing the quality of coffee to no longer be the
same.
Carrying out an in-depth investigation and moving to the place of the events, it was possible to see
with our own eyes what the current conditions of the sector are, and it is incredible to think that
only 50 years ago this municipality was one of the greatest references in all of Cundinamarca, the
relevance of this sector in the economy of the municipality is being displaced by others, However,
the small handful of small coffee growers who have produced high-quality coffee show small
glimmers of hope that with current technologies and different technological platforms could
provide a new lease of life for the sector.
The following case study shows, from the experience of 5 coffee growers in the region, what are
those needs and difficulties that most impact the small producer and how, through the
implementation of technological tools available today in the market, it is intended to make a
possible proposal for incorporation into the different international markets to boost the coffee
sector of the municipality again and mainly improve its quality of life.
